麻薬取締官は、厚生労働省の地方支分部局である地方厚生（支）局麻薬取締部に勤務する国家公務員である。国家公務員採用一般職試験（大卒程度試験）「行政」又は「デジタル・電気・電子」の合格者か、薬剤師若しくは薬剤師国家試験の合格者で29歳以下の者が、麻薬取締部の試験に合格し、採用となる。
採用後は、一定の実務経験を積んだ後、麻薬取締官研修を修了すると、麻薬取締官に任命される。（※）
麻薬取締部には部長の下に調査総務課、捜査課、密輸対策課、サイバー捜査課、国際情報課、鑑定課、情報管理分析課、情報官、密輸対策官、鑑定官等が配置されており、任命後はそれぞれの課に配属される。捜査には危険が伴うこともあるため、逮捕術訓練や拳銃射撃訓練も受ける。
（※）麻薬取締官になるための要件は政令により定められており、①2年以上麻薬取締に関する事務に就く、②3年以上薬事に関する行政事務に就く、③大学卒業後、1年以上麻薬取締に関する事務に就く、のいずれかを満たす必要がある。また定員は300人である（2024年5月現在）。
