職種には、地上戦闘の骨幹部隊である普通科、戦車部隊と偵察部隊を持つ機甲科、火力戦闘部隊である特科などがある。またそれ以外にも、「自己完結能力」を備えているため、一般社会と共通する職種が自衛隊内に存在する。土木・通信などのインフラ整備、輸送、航空、衣食住、医療、警務、会計などさまざまな職種があり、所属する部隊の中で役割を果たす。例えば、需品科は、食事、燃料や衣服の補給・整備、給水・入浴・洗濯などを行う。通信科は、各種の通信機器を用いて部隊間の指揮連絡のために通信の確保、写真・映像の撮影・処理などをする。武器科では、火器や戦車などの補給・整備を行う。
また、有事に備えて、さまざまな準備、訓練を行う。
災害現場に派遣された場合などは、昼夜交替制で人命救助にあたる。

採用種目は大卒者又は院卒者の場合、「一般幹部候補生」を選択できる。それ以外にも、18歳以上33歳未満の者であれば「一般曹候補生」や「自衛官候補生」の試験を受け陸上自衛官を目指すことができる。
また防衛大学校や防衛医科大学校医学科及び看護学科、高等工科学校から陸上自衛官を目指すことも可能である。
このほか、大学の理学部、工学部の3・4年次又は大学院修士課程に在学している者を対象とする「貸費学生」制度がある。これは、卒業後、専攻した学術を活かして引き続き自衛隊に勤務する意思を持つ者に対し防衛省より学資金が貸与されるものである。また、「予備自衛官補（一般・技能）」がある。
なお受験資格には学歴や免許、年齢のほか、身体条件もある。
入職後は、各入職経路や選択した種目によって異なるが、様々な教育を数か月～2年間受けた後、各部隊に勤務する。
自衛官の業務は多岐にわたり、職種は希望、適性などにより決定される。各種のスキルや資格を必要とするものが多いが、必要な知識、技能のほとんどは、自衛隊内の教育機関で習得することができる。試験・講習等を通じて外部でも通用する各種の資格（運転、操縦、通信、危険物取扱、医療、情報処理）も取得できる。
活動の特性上、集団で活動することが多い。部隊として連携し、組織的に行動することが求められる。連帯感や忍耐力、国を守るという責任感も大切である。
