大学などで所定の単位を取得することで、中学校教諭免許を得ることができる。その上で、都道府県や政令指定都市の教育委員会が実施する教員採用試験、若しくは私立学校の教員採用試験に合格する必要がある。
　教員採用試験は、各教科単位に行われ、合格すると採用候補名簿に登録される。
　採用後も、節目の年次ごとの研修の他、教科や担当別（教務主任、生徒指導主事、進路指導主事、学年主任など）に、様々な研修の機会が設けられている。求められる資質としては、中学校教育全体への理解、指導教科などの専門的な知識や技能、生徒に対する理解や責任感などが重要であり、また、カウンセリングに関する知識や技能も望まれる。
　副校長（教頭）、校長に昇任していくためには、選考試験を受ける必要がある。また、都道府県・市町村教育委員会の指導主事や管理主事などになる道も開かれているが、この場合も選考試験に合格する必要がある。
