入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、多領域にわたる幅広い知識、報道・評論するための思考力、記事を執筆するための文章力が必要とされるため大卒者がほとんどである。新規学卒の場合には卒業後、新聞社の試験を受け記者として採用される。
中途入社では、専門紙などで経験を重ねた者が入社することもある。
入社してからは、本社での研修の後、各部署に配属される。全国紙では、はじめは地方の支局に配属されて、いろいろな取材を経験する場合が多い。
力量によっては8～10年で取材現場のリーダー役を務めるキャップになる。またキャップを5～6年ほど経験すると、記者に取材活動や記事のまとめ方の指導をするデスクとなる者もいる。デスクを経験し、各部の部長、新聞編集の責任者である編集局長に昇進することもある。経験を積んでフリーの記者や大学教員になる者もいる。
何事にも興味を示す好奇心、興味を持った事柄について自分で体験して考える姿勢、それを追い求める探究心が必要とされる。
