入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、高校、専門学校、大学で建築系の学問を専攻し、構造力学、建築材料などの知識を習得してから入職するのが一般的である。
建築現場で施工管理を行うには、建築学の知識に加えて、建設業法をはじめとして道路交通関係、公害防止関係、危険物関係の法令など施工管理にかかわる法令や、工事を安全に行うための労働基準法、労働安全衛生法など労働関係法令についての知識も必要となる。
関連する資格には「建築施工管理技士」と「建築士」、「技術士」（建設部門）があるが、資格を取得している又は、一定の実務経験を積むと、大規模な現場に配置が義務付けられている監理技術者になることができる。
数十人から数百人の様々な職種の作業員を指揮し監督するため、指揮力、統率力、協調性と強い意志が求められる。また、予想外の施工上の問題点や事故、災害などが発生する可能性もあるため、物事を順序立てて考える習慣や、突発的な問題が生じても冷静に対処できる能力、先を読む力が要求される。屋外での作業が多いため、一定の体力も必要である。
