入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。新卒で入職する場合、機械、電気・電子、化学、物理、数学、情報工学を専攻している場合が多い。中途採用は、自動車関連産業もしくは同業の自動車メーカーからの転職者が多い。
入職後は自動車メーカーの研究開発部門に配属され、プロジェクトチーム内で担当分野ごとに企画、開発と実験を重ねていく。工場への配属を経て大規模な生産ラインを担当し生産拠点の責任者となる場合もある。
関連資格としては民間の「CAD利用技術者」などがある。
何よりも先ず、自動車への強い関心と興味があることが大前提である。配属先では報告書、マニュアル、設計基準、規格を記述し、理解するための論理的思考力や自らの考えを率直・的確に伝えられるコミュニケーション能力が求められる。また、他社メーカーの新車情報の収集力に加え、新しい技術やデザインの流行等にも常に関心を持つことが重要である。自動車の設計やデザインに関してのセンスも必要とされる。構造・デザインなどに新規性を打ち出す発想力や創造力も重要である。その上で、シミュレーション実験などで使用される大型コンピュータやCADを使いこなす経験とスキルが求められる。
