入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。新規学卒者の場合は、学校やハローワークの紹介という経路をとる。中途採用の場合は、ハローワークや求人広告などにより入職することが多い。建具専門の職業訓練校もあり、職業訓練校で学んだ後に、就職するケースもある。
　建具製造の仕事には主材料である木材の性質や刃物、機械、工具、塗料、接着剤、工作法、建築に関する知識等が必要である。また、必要な技能としては、刃物の研磨と調整、加工段取り、機械工具の操作、傷の補修などがあるが、こうした技能は経験を積むことにより習得する。
