入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。学校卒業後、建築板金工務店等に入職し、見習として修業しながら一人前になるケースのほか、職業訓練校で技能を磨き、厚生労働省の技能検定の「建築板金技能士」の資格を取得するケースもある。工場、倉庫、体育館のような比較的大きな建物の仕事を施工する会社では、専属の技能者を養成しているところもある。
　新しい材料や工法が多く出現してきており、これらの知識、技能を習得するために業界で実施する各種の講習会に参加することも大切である。「建築板金技能士」や「建築施工管理技士」などの資格の取得により、技能が向上し、昇進などの面で有利となる場合もある。
