入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、きもの着付師を育成するためのカリキュラムやレッスンのあるカルチャーセンターや学校、着付教室等で着付け技術や知識を学んで入職することが多い。
　熟達した技術と豊富な経験が必要とされるため、中高年齢者の入職も珍しくない。
　着付教室の場合、助手や見習として勤務し、指導技術やノウハウを習得してから講師となるのが一般的である。通っていた教室で講師の仕事をする場合もある。
　関連資格としては、厚生労働省が定める技能検定の「着付け技能士」や厚生労働省が認定する社内検定認定制度の資格がある。
　きものの着方や帯の結び方といった着付けの技術のほかに、きものの歴史や種類、染織、和装でのマナー、きものを着る時の小物など、幅広い知識が要求される。
　また、きものという伝統文化を伝えるという使命感をもって仕事をすることが必要である。人にものを教える立場として、責任感、礼儀作法、指導者としての心がまえや教え方のスキルなども求められる。
