入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。入職後、技術・技能の向上を図り経験を積むことによって、塗装工から施工管理技術者へと進む道が開かれている。
　厚生労働省の定める技能検定の「塗装技能士」の資格をはじめ、関連の免許・資格を取得すると技術の証明となる。経営能力があれば自営業として独立、開業の可能性もある。
　塗装作業は現場の状況、塗料の性質等に応じた下処理、準備、工程管理が必要であり、他の職種との連携もあることから、判断力や協調性が求められる。また、様々な作業環境で仕事ができるように、ある程度の体力は必要である。
　また、塗装の際にシンナーやエチルベルゼンなど人体に有害な物質を含むものを用いることもあるため、「有機溶剤作業主任者」、「毒物劇物取扱責任者」、「危険物取扱者」などの資格を持っていると有利である。
