電気工事を行うには「電気工事士」の資格が必要となるが、一般的には職業訓練校、専門学校、電気工事業組合の養成施設などで所定の課程を修了し、資格を取得してから入職するか、入社後に企業内の養成施設で訓練を受けて資格を取得する。「電気工事士」には第一種及び第二種があり、それぞれ従事できる業務の範囲が定められている。
　工業高校の電気科卒業者だけでなく、専門学校・高専・短大・大学卒業者が入職するケースもある。
　大企業などでは15～20年の経験を積むと現場の責任者である職長として数人の部下を任せられるようになる。また、「電気主任技術者」などの資格を取り、ビル管理技術者や電気工事管理者の仕事に転じたり、独立して電気工事業を営む場合もある。
　脚立やはしごの上など高くて狭い所での作業が多いので、平衡感覚が優れていて手先が器用な人が向いている。また、電気設備を取り扱うため、慎重さ、責任感なども求められる。
