入職にあたって、特に学歴は必要とされないが、必須資格に自動車運転免許がある。免許の種類は扱う車両の大きさによって異なり、普通自動車免許（車両総重量3.5トンまで）、準中型免許（同7.5トンまで）、中型免許（同11トンまで）、大型免許（同11トン以上）のいずれかとなるが、ほとんどの場合、大型免許が必須とされている。実際に仕事をするようになると、油圧ショベルで公道を走る場合などには大型特殊免許が必要となり、現場で油圧ショベルなどを操作するには車両系建築機械運転技能講習を、不整地での運搬作業をする中折れ式のアーティキュレートダンプトラックを操作するには不整地運搬車両運転技能講習を受講することが必要である。
　新卒で入職するケースはほとんどなく、中途採用が多い。大半がトラック運転手などから転職してくる者である。転職する者は同業やダンプカー以外のトラック運転手に転じるケースが多いが、自ら車両を購入して独立する例もある。
　運転のスキルはもちろん、取引先担当者や無線等で指示を受ける自社スタッフとのやりとりは頻繁にあるのでコミュニケーション力が求められる。
