入職にあたっては、車両に応じた運転免許が必要である。例えば、コンビニ配送ではメインとなる2トントラックが運転可能な準中型自動車免許は必須である。学歴は特に問われない。
中途採用も多い。タクシー運転手などの経験者もいるが、同業他社間の移動が多い。
入社して最初の1カ月程度は、運行管理や安全衛生管理の教育を受け、指導員や先輩が運転する車に同乗して、店舗の地図や商品を置く位置、周りの道路環境が記載された社内マニュアルを見ながら、荷物の積み方や卸し方、配送ルート、店舗のスタッフへの対応などを実地で学ぶ。OJTも含めて、研修期間は1カ月から3カ月程度が一般的である。
キャリアパスとしては、ある程度の経験を積んだら、研修などを受けたり、運行管理者試験、安全衛生管理者試験を受けて、運行管理者となり、管理職へと昇進していく場合もある。
配送先への到着時間が定められていることが多く、時間に正確であることが重要である。商品の入ったケースを運ぶこともあり一定の体力が必要である。配送先のスタッフと円滑なコミュニケーションが重要であり、入退店時の挨拶、礼儀正しい言動やマナーがとれることも求められる。制服等を着用し、名札をつけるなど身だしなみも忘れてはならない。
