入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要ない。車を使用して営業を行うことが多いため、自動車運転免許が必要となる場合が多い。学校卒業後、食品メーカー等に就職するのが一般的である。大手企業では総合職採用が多いが、職種別採用や地域限定採用を行う企業もある。総合職採用の場合は、入職後、希望や適性により営業部門に直接配属される場合と、他部門へ配属され、その後営業部門に配属される場合がある。
入職後は、マナー研修や生産現場の工場研修などを受けた後、初めの３か月から１年は、先輩や上司とともに得意先を訪問し、営業の仕方を覚える。その後、担当する得意先が割り当てられる。管理職へ昇進する際に、経理・財務、マネジメントなどに関する研修を実施する企業もある。
食品営業で最も重視されるのは、顧客との商談を円滑に進められるコミュニケーション能力である。食品市場の動向等について常に情報収集する必要があるため、食に関する興味や関心が高いことも重要である。また、自社の食品を売り込む際に、最近では、顧客にデータを示してプレゼンテーションをすることもあるため、データ分析力やプレゼンテーション能力も必要である。食品メーカーで扱う製品によっては、管理栄養士・栄養士など食品に関する専門知識を持っていることが求められることもある。
