この職業に就くと、まず花や鉢の正しい扱い方を先輩に教わる。花について勉強しながら店の清掃や配達の仕事を覚えていき、少しずつ接客や販売の仕事も任されるようになる。一人前になるためには、販売だけでなく仕入れもできなければならない。
仕事は、花を仕入れることから始まる。卸売市場に出向き、花や鉢を自分の目で見てよいものを少しでも安く買うことが大切である。このために、出荷情報や業界の動向に気を配るとともに、自分の店の状況を考え、上手な仕入れをすることが重要となる。
仕入れてきた花は種類や形によって水揚げをしたり、枝・茎や余分な部分を切るなどして加工・保存し、値段をつけて店頭で販売する。顧客の希望に応えながら花を選び、花束やブーケを作る。
フラワーアレンジメントや生け花などの技術や知識を習得すると、高度なアレンジや結婚式用ブーケのデザインの制作などにも携わるようになる。さらに、大きな会場装飾や店頭ディスプレイ、葬儀場の演出などを担当することもある。
