シューフィッターになるには、靴店、メーカーなどでの販売・製造に関する実務やフットケア、足の障害にかかわる医療関係等の実務を３年以上積む必要がある。この条件をクリアして初めて、足と靴と健康協議会主催のシューフィッター養成講座で認定を受けることができる。養成講座は3日間・25時間のスクーリングと3ヵ月間の通信講座で構成される。足の病気や革靴などの基礎知識と、足型測定、フィッティング、パッキングワークなどの実習を行う。所定の審査に合格すると、初級資格が与えられる。
　シューフィッターは専門知識・技術をもった靴の販売員であり、一般的には靴専門店やデパートの販売員として採用されて経験を積み、資格を取得する場合がある。
　この職業に就く適性として、顧客に接し、適切にアドバイスするためのコミュニケーション能力が重要である。更に、資格取得後、足と靴と健康協議会で常時開催される講習会などを通じて専門知識や技術を常に向上させる努力も求められる。
