入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。資格がなくてもソムリエの仕事に就くことはできるが、ソムリエとして活躍するためには豊富な知識とそれを活かすための才能や経験が必要であることから、資格試験に合格したソムリエは認定バッジを胸元につけ、業務にあたる者が多い。
ソムリエの資格はソムリエの定義・役割・求められる能力に適うと認められた者に対して、日本においては一般社団法人日本ソムリエ協会（以下J.S.A.）により認定される。
ソムリエの資格は、①酒類・飲料を提供する飲食サービス ②酒類・飲料の仕入れ、管理、輸出入、流通、販売、製造、教育機関講師 ③酒類・飲料を取り扱うコンサルタント業務のいずれかを3年以上経験しているなどの受験資格を満たした上で、年1回の日本ソムリエ協会（J.S.A）の認定試験を受験し、合格すると取得できる。ソムリエの試験内容としては、CBT試験、テイスティング（利き酒）、論述試験、サービス実技等がある。また、ソムリエの資格を取得して3年以上経った者で、かつ通算10年以上の実務経験がある者はソムリエ・エクセレンスの認定試験を受験できる。
世界の酒類・飲料について、歴史、産地、品種、品質等級、世界の料理の知識と酒類・飲料との相性などの知識が必要となる。すぐれた味覚や嗅覚のセンスが求められる。
