入職にあたって、特に学歴は必要とされないが、指導資格を取得するには車種に応じた運転免許が必要とされる。
　教習所に採用されると「現場事前教養」と「職員講習」を受けるか、自動車安全運転センターが行う研修課程を修了し、公安委員会の教習指導員資格審査を受ける。なお、教習指導員資格審査の受験資格は満21歳以上となっている。合格すると「教習指導員資格者証」が得られ、「現場事後教養」を受けてから指導員として仕事を始める。
　管理者の推薦申請により公安委員会の行う技能検定員資格審査を受け、合格すると技能検定員となることができる。優秀な運転技術や車の構造、運転に必要なルールなどの知識が欠かせない。また、わかりやすく説明できること、教習生に対しての思いやりが必要であり、事故が起きないように細心の注意を払って丁寧に教えることなども求められる。
