入職にあたって特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。採用に関しては、高校や大学等の新卒者を定期的に採用することもあるが、人員補充が必要になった場合にその都度、ハローワークや求人広告を通じて中途採用を行う企業が多い。採用されると、一般的に、基本的な接客、端末操作、店舗管理、商品管理・陳列などに関する研修及び指導を受ける。その後は配属先の店舗においてOJTにより仕事を覚える。
映画や音楽が好きであること、サービス精神を持って接客できることが求められる。消費者ニーズに合った品揃えができるよう、独自性の高い販売促進を展開するための企画力も求められる。
1～3年くらい経験を積むと、主任となって、アルバイトやパート従業員の管理、売上・経費などのお金の管理、商品の仕入れ・発注、会員や商品のデータ管理などを行うようになる。
更に経験を積むと、店長として店舗全体の運営管理を任されるケースや、多店舗経営を展開している企業の場合には、地域ブロックのスーパーバイザーとなって、担当地区の店長やスタッフの指導などを任されるケースもある。
