介護保険制度の下で指定居宅サービスとして福祉用具の貸与・販売事業を行う事業者は、各事業所に2名以上の福祉用具専門相談員を配置することが定められている。
　福祉用具専門相談員になるためには、都道府県知事の指定を受けた研修事業者が実施する「福祉用具専門相談員指定講習」を受講し、50時間のカリキュラムを修了する必要がある。ただし保健師、看護師、准看護師、理学療法士、作業療法士、社会福祉士、介護福祉士、義肢装具士については、講習を受けなくても福祉用具専門相談員の業務にあたることができる。介護保険施設の職員やホームヘルパーがそれぞれの業務で役立てるために取得することも多い。
