「福祉用具」とは、心身の機能が低下し日常生活を営むのに支障のある高齢者や障害者の日常生活上の便宜を図るための用具、これらの人たちの機能訓練のための用具をいう。その種類は、車椅子、特殊ベッド、褥瘡予防用具、体位変換器、手すり、スロープ、歩行器、移動用リフトといった大きなものから、障害者用の食器のような小さいものまで多岐にわたっている。最近では、新しい技術が次々に福祉機器・用具に導入され、応用分野も種類も多くなっていることから、その利用には専門的知識が必要となってきている。
主な業務としては、利用者と福祉用具で解決できることをともに考えて、利用者に合った福祉用具選定のアドバイス、利用者との相談を踏まえた福祉用具利用計画の作成、利用者の障害、要介護の程度、住宅の構造、環境に合わせた福祉用具の適合・調整、取扱説明、定期的に利用者宅で福祉用具の点検をおこなう訪問確認などがある。
福祉用具専門相談員は、介護保険の指定を受けた福祉用具の貸与、販売を行う事業所において、2名以上の配置が義務付けられている。利用者、家族とのコミュニケーションを通じて、介護を受ける側、行う側双方の立場を理解し、要介護や障害の程度、住宅構造・環境を考慮した上で、適切な用具の選び方、使い方を他の介護保険サービスの専門職と連携しながらアドバイスする。また、利用者の家庭等を訪問し、アドバイスをする場合も多い。
