都道府県警察官になるためには、都道府県警察官採用試験に合格する必要がある。
警察官採用試験の受験資格は、都道府県警察ごとに若干の違いがあるが、身体的条件の他、試験区分によりそれぞれ年齢要件が設けられている。
新たに採用された警察官は、都道府県警察学校において、職責を自覚し、使命感を培うとともに、基礎的な知識及び技能を修得するための教育訓練を受ける。
都道府県警察学校を卒業した後は、まず警察署に配置になり、交番での勤務を通じて主に犯罪の予防・検挙や交通の指導取締りなどに当たり、その後は本人の希望、能力、適性等に応じて専門分野へ登用される。
幹部への昇任は、試験により上位階級に昇任することが可能である。
