臨床検査技師国家試験に合格して免許を取得する必要がある。
国家試験は年1回行われ、臨床検査技師養成所（大学・短大・専門学校）を卒業した者、大学の獣医学部、薬学部で厚生労働大臣の指定する科目を修めた者、大学の医学部、歯学部を卒業した者が受験できる。
免許取得後、新規採用の場合は、学校のあっ旋で就職することが多く、転職の際には、就職情報サイトなどのほか、日本臨床衛生検査技師会が行っている無料職業紹介所や出身学校の紹介、学会誌などの求人広告を介して再就職する。
臨床検査技師は、血液の採取や生理学的検査では直接患者と接する医療行為を担当し、また、患者の生命にかかわる正確さを要求される作業に携わることから、検査を行う際の慎重さ、冷静な判断力、責任感と忍耐力が必要である。医療の高度化、成人病予防検診の普及などによる臨床検査の量や種類の増大、扱う検査機器の高度化、多様化が進む中、常に知識、技術の修得、研鑽が求められる。
基礎医学の知識にはじまり、機器の扱い、統計的知識も重要となる。
