診療放射線技師になるには、厚生労働省が管轄する国家試験に合格し、診療放射線技師免許を得る必要がある。高校卒業後、大学（4年制）、短期大学（3年制）、専門学校（昼間3年制・夜間4年制）など国が指定した診療放射線技師教育機関にて規定の時間数を習得することで試験の受験資格を得ることができる。現在、3年制教育機関は4年制への移行が進んでおり、年々4年制大学が増加傾向にある。
　入職経路としては、新規就職者は学校・養成所のあっ旋や専門誌の求人広告によることが多い。また、日本放射線技師会と各都道府県放射線技師会でも就職のあっ旋を行っている。
