臨床工学技士国家試験に合格し、厚生労働省医政局医事課試験免許室に申請することによって臨床工学技士名簿に登録が行われ、厚生労働大臣による免許が発行される。受験資格を得るためには、高校卒業後、臨床工学技士養成校で専門教育を3年間受けるほか、医療系（医師、看護師、その他の医療技術職）の学校や医用工学系の大学で必要な専門科目を履修したうえで1～2年の短期コースを修了するか、大学で指定科目を修了して卒業することでも受験資格が得られる。
また、国家資格を取得した臨床工学技士に対し、関連学会が独自に行っている透析技術認定士、体外循環技術認定士などの学会認定資格制度もある。これは臨床工学技士がより高度で専門性の高い業務に従事できるための能力の向上と、よりよい医療サービスを目指したものである。生命にかかわる仕事であるため、異常事態が起きた時、冷静沈着な対応が要求される。絶えず慎重に仕事を行い、細心の注意を払うことが必要である。
