例えば、野外活動指導者の場合、キャンプ、サイクリング、ホステリング、オリエンテーリングの４つの分野ごとに資格がある。また、自然保護系のインストラクターの場合には、例えば、日本自然保護協会が主催する養成講習会を修了することで、自然観察指導員として登録される。この職業に就いてから一人前に仕事ができるようになるためには多くの現場経験が必要である。近年では活動内容がより高度化し、単に経験の年数だけでなく、指導する内容の「質」が問われている。また、独立してフリーで活動する道も考えられる。
