　国や都道府県で、農業施策の企画、食品の検査、農業土木工事の設計管理など農業関係の仕事をするには、大学や高校で農学を学び、公務員試験に合格しなくてはならない。
　農協の営農指導員や都道府県の農業普及指導員になるには、農協や都道府県に採用され、農業関係の実務経験を積んだ上で、それぞれの試験を受ける。
　農業者に働きかけたり、一緒に仕事をすることが多く、公共性の高い仕事であり、指導力や協調性、公共に奉仕する責任感が求められる。また、農業生産の現場では、ある程度の体力が必要であり、常に作物や家畜の状態に目を配り、気象の変化などに的確に対応する判断力も求められる。
