官公庁に勤めるには、公務員試験に合格する必要がある。民間の場合は、学校への求人などにより入社試験を受けて就業するのが一般的である。
仕事は様々な専門分野にわたっているため、その専門によって必要とされる知識も異なり、植物、特に樹木や森林植物生態学、病理、菌類、昆虫、土壌などの生物関係学、治山・治水・林道などの土木工学、あるいは伐採・搬出などの機械工学、林業経営や木材流通などの経営・経済学、木材工学、木材化学など広範にわたる。関連資格として、文部科学省所管の技術士（森林部門）、国土交通省所管の測量士、農林水産省所管の林業普及指導員、林業技士などがある。官公庁などの場合は、入職してから林野庁の森林技術総合研修所などで更に専門教育を受ける。
林業作業者を指導・監督して仕事を進めたり、森林所有者などへの技術の普及を行うため、指導力・統率力や、協調性、コミュニケーション力が必要である。森林の持つ多面的機能の観点から、調査力、計画力、判断力、公共に奉仕する責任感も求められる。
