また、鎖を編んだり、貴金属や宝石のカットは機械を使って行う場合でも、原型づくりやろう付け、細工、仕上げ磨きなどは手作業となる。
貴金属の素材は他の金属と異なり、ねばりがあって融点が比較的高いという特性をもっているので、加工が難しい。高価な素材を使い、創作性の高い製品を作り上げる仕事であり、高度な技術や経験が求められる。現在は商品の種類もデザインも極めて多様化し、商品ごとに専門化してきている。
