入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、専門学校や大学の理学系、工学系専攻の卒業者が多い。中途採用もある。
採用に際しては、化学などの基礎学力、知識、判断力などが問われる。
入職後は、最初は熟練者の補助をしながら分析技術を習得し、実践を重ねて技術力を養成する。各種原理の分析方法について学習し、実験を重ねて順次マスターするとともに、各種講習会などにも参加して技術力を高める。様々な対象物質を分析して実戦力を身に付け、依頼者の高度な分析への要求に対しても、それに適合した分析の仕方を設計できるベテラン技術者になるためには10年以上の経験が必要となる。
分析値には信頼性が要求されるため、分析化学技術者は分析試験所の認定を受けるなど、技術力の第三者による評価が必要になっている。そのためには、技術者の教育訓練も日常的に行ない、外部機関による分析技能試験に参加することなどが要求される。
関連資格として厚生労働省の定める技能検定の「化学分析技能士」がある。また、関係団体の「環境計量士」、「環境測定分析士」等の資格を持っていれば仕事の幅が広がる。
分析結果に対する責任を持ち、正確で迅速な判断力、注意力、忍耐力、几帳面さが求められる。
