新卒で入社した場合、3ヵ月程度、研修を受け、配属される。仕事をしながらOJTで実践力や応用力を身につけていく。その後、定期的に集合研修を受けたり、リモートでの研修を受けたりする会社もある。開発での設計書を社内で相互にレビューし、お互いの技術をチェックすることもある。
中途入社の場合は、経験者が同業他社からの転入してくることが多い。システム開発等の経験を積み、ITインフラの開発を担当するようになる場合もある。
その後のキャリアパスとしては、プロジェクトマネージャから管理職となったり、特定分野のスペシャリストとなったりする。経験を積みIT分野のコンサルタントとなる場合もある。
関連資格として基本情報技術者、応用情報技術者、システムアーキテクト、ネットワークスペシャリスト、データベーススペシャリスト等があり、仕事をしながら受験する者もいる。
