クライアントから発注を受ける動画制作には、特に学歴や資格は求められないが、多くの場合、映像系の学校を卒業し、映像制作会社に入る。その映像制作会社で経験を積み、独立するという例が多い。最近では、学生のうちから動画制作の経験を重ね、そのままプロを目指すという道もある。ただし、独立したり、フリーランスとなる場合は、映像の技術とともに、業界関係者と幅広いつながりを持つことが仕事をする上では重要である。
クライアント、広告会社等関係者と十分なコミュニケーションをとり、クライアントの要望をよく理解し、期待に応える技術力、納期までに仕上げる責任感が必要である。時流が分る感性や制作に対する熱意、満足できるまで制作を続ける根気も重要である。外国語の動画は増えているが、翻訳は外注してしまうため、制作自体には語学は必ずしも求められない。
一人前となるには、経験年数だけでなく、感性やセンスがクライアントなど業界に認められ、コンスタントな受注件数を確保し、条件の良い仕事を受注できることが必要である。
動画共有サイトで広告収入を得るには、総再生時間や視聴者数の基準に基づいた審査を受けて、認められることが必要なところもある。
技術面、機材等で動画制作者を支援し、仕事を仲介したり、その人が動画共有サイトで人気が出るようにする会社も出てきている。
