入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。ディスプレイデザイナーとしてディスプレイ専門会社等に就職する場合は、ディスプレイデザインや空間演出デザイン、VMDなど関連する専攻がある専門学校や大学などで基本や応用を学んでいることが多い。他の職種からの転職はそれほど多くないが、百貨店などの販売員が商品装飾展示のスキルを身につけてディスプレイデザイナーになる場合もある。
入職後は、アシスタントデザイナーとして数年の実務を経て、一人前のディスプレイデザイナーとして仕事を任されるようになる。その後、デザイナーとしての専門職を続けながらVMDディレクター等になったり、デザイナーの専門職を離れてデザイン会社等の経営に携わる者もいる。
関連資格としては、厚生労働省が定める技能検定の「商品装飾展示技能士」がある。
基本的なデザイン力や表現力が備わっていること、ファッションや流行に敏感であることが求められる。テーマに基づいた今日的なイメージを表現でき、伝えたいメッセージを演出し、共感してもらえることが必要である。
また、販売促進を目的とするため、対象となる顧客層のライフスタイルや市場の分析などマーケティング関連、商品やファッションの関連など、広範囲な知識が求められる。
