入職にあたって特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。大卒者の場合、学部や専攻は問われないが、コミュニケーション論やメディア論を専攻していたものが比較的多い。
小規模のPR会社では即戦力となる経験者の中途採用が多いが、中堅・大手では新卒採用にも積極的である。
中堅・大手のPR会社が中途採用する場合は、人脈や課題解決力、広報のスキルに加え、業界特有の幅広い知識を求められる。このため異業種からの参入は少ない。
新卒の場合は初めに短期間で基本的なビジネスマナーや知識について研修が行われることが一般的である。その後は3～5年程度、メイン担当者のアシスタントとして働きながら仕事を覚える。また新人のうちは自分の担当以外のPRイベントや日本パブリックリレーションズ協会のセミナーに参加したり、社内勉強会などにも出席して学習を深めてゆく。ある程度のコミュニケーション力、問題解決力、リーダーシップが身につけば一人前として認められ、メイン担当者として仕事を任されるようになる。
関連資格として日本パブリックリレーションズ協会の「PRプランナー」がある。一部のPR会社では同資格の取得者に対して特別手当を支給している。
高い情報収集能力とコミュニケーション力が必要となる。また、常日頃から社会やメディアが求めているトレンドを的確に把握することも重要である。グローバルに顧客を獲得してゆく場合は英語力が求められるほか、原稿を執筆する場合はプロのライターと同程度の文章力も求められることもある。
