入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、医学、薬学等の知識があると仕事に役立つ。民間会社のSMO（Site Management Organization：治験施設支援機関）や医療機関（病院等）に就職する。SMOは治験を依頼する製薬会社と医療機関の間に入り、各種支援を行う会社であり、新卒の採用も行っている。SMOに所属し、複数の医療機関での治験を担当する場合もある。医療機関は新卒で治験コーディネーターを採用することは少なく、看護師、薬剤師、臨床検査技師などが治験コーディネーターを兼務することが多い。大きな医療機関の場合は、治験事務局に医療従事者や治験コーディネーターの経験者が、治験コーディネーターとして直接雇用される場合もある。
関連資格として日本臨床薬理学会と関連協会の認定試験がある。治験コーディネーターとして働きながら2～3年で取得を目指すのが一般的である。
医学、薬学の基礎知識、薬事関連法規への理解、統計処理や文書作成等を行う事務処理能力が求められる。医師をはじめとする医療スタッフや被験者等関係者間を調整する能力、コミュニケーション能力等が重要である。
