治験とは医薬品等が人の体に有効で安全であることを立証し、承認申請するための臨床試験のことである。治験がスムーズに行われるよう、治験参加者をサポートしたり、関係者のスケジュールを調整したりする。CRC（Clinical Research Coordinator）とも呼ばれる。
基本的な仕事としては、治験が始まる前の事前準備、実際の治験が始まってからの業務、治験の結果報告という３段階に分けられる。一つの治験を実施するためには病院内で様々な部門、医師や看護師などへの説明やスケジュールの調整、具体的な作業の依頼が必要になる。治験がスムーズに行われるためには、治験コーディネーターの調整が不可欠である。また、治験に参加する患者がとまどったり、服薬の方法を誤ったりすることのないよう、わかりやすい説明や間違えないようにする工夫が必要となる。
具体的な仕事としては、まず、治験の実施計画書を読み、製薬会社が行う医師、看護師、臨床検査技師、薬剤師、病院の治験事務局への説明会に参加する。製薬会社から医薬品や検査キットを受け取り、被験者が来院するときの準備をする。治験の実施計画書に基づき、被験者の募集とスクリーニングを行う。被験者に渡す治験の説明や同意書を作成し、医師が被験者に説明する際、同席する。医師と患者が決める診察の日時、投薬や検査の日時などの予定表を作成する。医師の診察に同席し、服薬状況、有害事象などを記録する。医師の確認も得ながら、製薬会社に報告する症例報告書を作成する。有害事象が生じた場合、経緯や関係すると考えられる情報から報告書を作成し、製薬会社と病院に提出する。治験が終了したら、治験終了の報告書を作成し、製薬会社と病院に提出する。
