入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、業務の高度化等により大学卒業者が多く、法学部出身者の割合が高い。
かつては、日本の法律事務所は所属弁護士が多くても数十人の規模だったが、1990年代以降、法律事務所の合併や新人弁護士の採用増により事務所の大型化が進んだことによりパラリーガルの新卒採用もある。一方、弁護士の引退で所属事務所がなくなったパラリーガルや、別業種からの転職者等中途採用も多い。逆に、パラリーガルからの転職先としては、同業の他事務所のほか、一般企業の法務部に転じる例がある。
入職後は、半年～1年は受付等をしながら事務所の仕事全般を学び、業務を一通り経験する。特別の指示をしないで任せられるようになるには最低で5年の経験が必要と言われている。
関連資格としては、日本弁護士連合会が「事務職員能力認定試験」を実施している。
基本的には法律に関わる様々な専門知識が必要である。事務所の規模によって任せられる仕事の範囲が異なるが、迅速、正確な書類作成能力、臨機応変な対応力が求められる。弁護士との信頼関係を築くことはもちろん、依頼人や関係者と調整等を行う機会も多くコミュニケーション能力も重要である。
