入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされない。稲作には水田や農業機械などの大規模な経営資産が必要となるため、親や親戚などから資産を引き継いで就業する場合と、新規に就農する場合では条件が大きく異なる。特に、農家以外の人は、農地（水田等）の購入ができないため、多くは借地で始めている。一方で、これまで米生産を担ってきた生産者の高齢化が進み、後継者がいない水田は借地や作業委託という形で地域の特定の生産者に集積され、経営規模が拡大する傾向にある。
新規に就農しようとする場合は、相当の設備投資が必要になるため、「全国新規就農相談センター」では、農業に興味がある人のために農地・家屋情報や求人情報などを提供し、バックアップをしている。
稲作の基本的な知識や技術は、各農業法人が提供するインターンシップ制度を利用したり、農業高校や農業大学校、就農準備校などで稲作の技術と経営に関する研修を受けて身につけることができる。アルバイトを募集している農家で米作りの作業をし、稲作の技術と経営に関する知識を身に付ける方法もある。
稲作と他の作物との小規模な複合経営からはじめ、規模を拡大して稲作だけで安定した収入が得られるようになるには、少なくとも数年はかかる。
経営者となるには、米作りの専門知識と技術のほかに、経営管理能力も必要となる。
トラクターや軽トラックなどの運転のため「普通自動車免許」「大型特殊自動車免許」を取得していると有益である。
