入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格を必要としない病院もあるが、専門学校に入学し、動物看護に関する専門的な知識や技術を身につけるのが一般的である。動物看護について学べる大学や短期大学、専門学校もある。動物の臨床検査や栄養学、保育、グルーミングなど、幅広い知識や技術を身につける必要がある。卒業後は動物病院などに就職し、実務経験を積む。
また、令和４年５月より国家資格「愛玩動物看護師」が創設された。愛玩動物看護師資格を取ると、上記の業務のうち、獣医師の指示の下での診療の補助（採血やマイクロチップの装着等）を行うことができるようになる。資格を取得するためには、愛玩動物看護師を養成するとして指定された大学や短期大学、専門学校に通い、国家試験を受験・合格の上、愛玩動物看護師名簿に登録される必要がある。
動物が好きなことに加え、動物の命に関わる仕事のため、幅広い経験と知識、様々な事態に対し冷静に対処する能力が求められる。診療のために暴れる動物を押さえつけたり、動けない動物を運んだりするなど、一定の体力が必要とされる。また、動物は言葉を話せないため、飼主から症状などの情報を的確に得る必要があり、コミュニケーション能力も重要である。
