入職にあたって必須となる学歴や資格はない。工業系の高校卒業者が多く、大卒の場合は工学部等、理系学部の出身者が大半である。新卒と中途採用の割合は事業所による。
入職後、一部の大企業においては、企業内訓練校で座学と実技を組み合わせたOff-JTの研修機会が設けられることもあるが、そうではない大多数の事業所においては、実際の製品を扱いながら指導役からマンツーマンの指導を受けるOJTにより知識・技術を身に付ける。一つの工作機械に習熟するまでに数か月から数年かかると言われる。その後も、扱える工作機械の種類を増やしたり技術を深めていくことで、汎用工作機械工としての実力を高めていく。事業所の規模によっては、一定の実力や経験を認められた者がグループリーダーとしてグループ内への指示・とりまとめや他部署との調整等を担い、その後マネジメントへ進むキャリアパスもある。
関連資格としては、厚生労働省が定める技能検定の「機械加工技能士」がある。試験は汎用工作機械（及びNC工作機械）の種類及び級により区分されている。先述のとおり必須の資格ではないが、自らの技能程度を示す証しであり、社内規定による資格手当が支給されたり転職において有利に働くことがある。なお、研削盤を扱う場合は、労働安全衛生法に基づき機械研削盤といし取替え・試運転業務特別教育を受ける必要がある。
向いているのは、手先が器用でものづくりが好き、集中して根気よく作業に取り組めるいわゆる職人気質な人である。また、平面・立体の図形を容易に理解しイメージできる空間認識能力や、適切な作業段取りを組み上げる能力も必須である。
