養護教諭として仕事をするには、養護教諭の免許状が必要である。養護教諭免許状は、養護教諭の教職課程を有する大学等で所定の単位を修得することで取得できる。このほか、看護師、保健師の免許を保有している場合は、大学等において通常よりも少ない単位を修得することで、各都道府県の教育委員会に申請し、取得することができる。
免許取得後、公立の学校に勤務するには各自治体の教員採用試験に、国立・私立の学校に勤務するには各学校法人等の採用試験に合格する必要がある。養護教諭の採用者数が少ないこともあり、採用倍率は他の教員と比較して高くなっている。
公立学校の場合、異動が定期的にあり異動先の学校種は様々である。自治体によって差はあるが、養護教諭としての経験を積みながら主任教諭、主幹教諭・指導教諭職を経て、選考や審査に合格することで副校長、校長などの管理職になる道も開かれている。
養護教諭は各学校の中での保健管理全体を原則一人で担う仕事であるため、学校の中での他の教職員との連携が必須となる。また、学校内の教職員のほか、外部機関、保護者とのやりとりも多いため、多くの人と連携し、情報共有できるコミュニケーション能力および様々な人の意見を集約し、まとめられる調整能力が必要である。学校において児童生徒の心身の健康に直接関わる立場であるため、児童生徒の保健管理、心身の発達に関する専門的知識のほか、相手の話に耳を傾け、理解し共感できるような心理的サポートに関する技能やスキルも求められる。
