入職にあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、就業者のほとんどが大卒者で、入職経路は学校の紹介や一般の公募による。
　製薬会社等へ入社後に、業界が定めた共通カリキュラムによる「導入教育」を受け、自社製品情報のみならず医学・薬学の知識、疾病の知識、関連法規等を学ぶ。その上で、公益財団法人MR認定センターが実施する認定試験を受けることとなる。なお、「導入教育」を修了すれば、MR認定資格の合否にかかわらず医療情報担当者として就業することはできるが、MR認定資格を有していない医療情報担当者はほとんどいない。
　MR認定資格取得後も、毎年継続教育を受ける。
　医薬品を取扱い、医療従事者に適切に使用してもらう必要があることから、医学・薬学的知識はもちろん倫理観、科学的・論理的な説明能力、医師等と信頼関係を構築し、関係者とのネットワークを維持・拡大できるミュニケーション能力が求められる。また、常に新しい医薬品情報等を主体的に収集する等自己研鑽を継続できることが必要である。
