仕事は大きく分けて3つある。
第1は情報の提供で、病院や個人医院、薬局などを訪問し、医師や薬剤師に面接して、自社の医薬品の特長や品質、有効性、副作用、使用上の注意といった、適正使用のための情報をパンフレットなどを使って説明する。医療機関からの薬に関する問い合わせにも対応する。
第2は情報の収集で、医師や薬剤師から製品の有効性、安全性、品質などの医薬品情報を集める。また、医薬品に対する医療関係者の要望やアイデアを集めて、自社に報告することにより、新薬の開発などにつなげる。
第3は情報の伝達で、収集した医薬品の有効性や安全性情報について分析、評価した結果を医療従事者に対して迅速かつ正確に伝達する。
また、医学・薬学情報を提供するための講演会を開催したり、開業医と勤務医との連携など、医療関係者相互の情報のネットワークを支援することもある。
こうした情報活動を通じて、自社の医薬品の適正な使用と普及を図る。ただし、直接、医薬品の販売は行わない。医師、薬剤師、看護師などとともに医療の一端を担う職業ともいえる。

製薬会社等へ入社後に、業界が定めた共通カリキュラムによる「導入教育」を受け、自社製品情報のみならず医学・薬学の知識、疾病の知識、関連法規等を学ぶ。その上で、公益財団法人MR認定センターが実施する認定試験を受けることとなる。なお、「導入教育」を修了すれば、MR認定資格の合否にかかわらず医療情報担当者として就業することはできるが、MR認定資格を有していない医療情報担当者はほとんどいない。
MR認定資格取得後も、毎年継続教育を受ける。
