スポーツ店には、スポーツ全般を扱う総合店、特定のスポーツ用品に特化した専門店などがある。規模も大型店や中小の小売店など多様であるが、仕事は通常、品揃え・仕入れ、店舗演出、接客・サービス、販促企画の4つの柱からなっている。大型店ではそれぞれ担当が分かれているが、中小の小売店では一人で全て行うことが多い。
まず、メーカーが開催する見本市と呼ばれる商談会に参加し、次のシーズン（夏であればマリンスポーツ、冬であればスキーなど）の商品を仕入れる。仕入担当は新製品の動向、流行などに常に注意して販売計画を立て、数量を決定する。
次に、店舗に送られてきた仕入れた商品を、店全体のレイアウトを考えて陳列し、主力商品などはディスプレイする。来店客には、スポーツそのもののアドバイスを含めて商品のサイズ、機能、デザイン、カラー、特徴、使用方法などをわかりやすく説明し、商品が決まったら包装して代金を精算する。商品に加工が必要であったり、配送する場合などは、その手続を行う。購入した商品の相談や修理に訪れる顧客へのサービスも行う。
