中小企業診断士の資格が必要である。そのためには、まず、中小企業診断協会が実施する1次試験に合格する必要がある。その後は2つの方法があり、1つめは同協会が実施する2次試験に合格し実務補習を修了するか、15日以上の診断実務を行う。もう1つは中小企業基盤整備機構又は登録養成機関が実施する養成課程を修了する方法である。中小企業診断士の登録には、経済産業大臣の登録を受ける必要がある。登録は5年ごとの更新が必要で、更新の際は研修を受講することや一定の実務経験があることなどが要件となる。
関連する資格を併せて取得し、中小企業を全般的に助言、支援する中小企業診断士として開業しているケースもある。
企業経営全般についての豊富な知識と経験を持ち、依頼者に信頼される誠実さが求められる。また、企業の経営環境は日々変化しており、絶えず専門能力の維持・向上に努めていく姿勢が必要である。
関連する資格を併せて取得し、中小企業を全般的に助言、支援する中小企業診断士として開業しているケースもある。
