新卒者が経営コンサルタントになるには、経営学部や商学部、工学部（経営工学科）などの大学や大学院を卒業して経営コンサルティング会社（コンサルティングファーム）に就職するのが一般的である。外資系の経営コンサルティング会社では、MBA取得者の割合が高い。
経営コンサルタント関連の資格としては中小企業診断士や経営士などがある。ただし、これらの資格がなくても経営コンサルタントになることは可能である。また、税理士などの士業が専門知識を活かして経営コンサルタントを行う業務に参入する例もある。
大企業等において、金融、財務、国際、技術、人事など、様々な専門業務を経験した後、その経験を活かして経営コンサルタントに転身する人もいる。その場合は学歴よりも、どのような専門業務を経験してきたかという職歴が重視される。また、専門分野を特化し、「ISOコンサルタント」など、得意分野がわかる肩書を名乗るコンサルタントもいる。比較的若い30～40代の経営コンサルタントはDXコンサルティングなどを行う者が多い。
