仕事をするにあたって、特に学歴や資格は必要とされないが、「家事の業務」の場合は、掃除、洗濯、調理など家事一般の経験が必要とされる。また、「介護の業務」の場合は、食事や排せつ、入浴、通院介助など一般的な介護の経験が必要とされる。
　就職活動は、厚生労働大臣許可の家政婦紹介所に求職登録することから始まる。個人家庭等からの求人があれば、求人者からの「労働条件」に基づき、紹介所のあっ旋を受ける。あっ旋を受けた求職者は紹介状を持参して求人者宅（就労場所）に行く。
　家政婦として安心して働くための各種保険制度も整備されており、必要に応じて保険に加入して働くことが可能である。
　家政婦紹介所からあっ旋された求人者との雇用契約が終了すれば、次の求人者の紹介を家政婦紹介所から受けることとなる。一定の体力があれば年齢にかかわらず続けられる仕事である。
　また、スキルアップ等のため厚生労働大臣認定の「家政士検定試験」がある。
