具体的な仕事としては、新しい入所等希望者に対し施設やサービス等の説明をしたり、相談に応じ、利用が決まれば入所等の契約手続を行う。入所後は、本人や家族の状況を把握し利用者の状況に合ったサービス等について本人や家族と相談を行う。その際、利用者の主治医、介護支援専門員（ケアマネジャー）とも適宜、連絡調整を行う。入所時だけではなく、必要に応じて、本人や家族と面談し、状況の報告、問題があれば解決に向けた対応策の検討を行う。地域の行政機関や保健・医療機関などと連携して支援策を検討することもある。
職場によっては、介護職員が行う介護業務を兼務する場合もある。一方で、施設長や、ケアマネジャーが生活相談員を兼務している場合もある。
また、施設職員の資質向上のため研修、勉強会を企画、実施したり、この職業を目指す学生を実習生として受け入れ、研修を行う場合もある。
更に、地域住民との交流の企画や苦情等への対応を生活相談員が行う場合もある。
