理学療法士として必要な知識と技能を養成校で3年以上修得し、国家試験に合格して免許を取得することが必要である。
養成校の教育内容は、基礎教養科目、解剖学、生理学、運動学、病理学などの基礎医学、臨床医学や社会福祉学、地域リハビリテーション、病院やリハビリテーションセンターでの臨床実習を含む理学療法などからなる。なお、作業療法士の資格を有している場合は、養成校で２年以上学ぶことで理学療法士の受験資格を得る。
入職経路としては、卒業した養成校からの紹介や、専門誌などの求人広告、リハビリテーション関係者からの情報等がある。
理学療法士は、専門領域の知識や技術のほか、評価や療法運動を行うとき、正しい場所に適切に力を加えたり、患者の姿勢のバランスを保持したり、移動の時に介助することができるよう、相応な体力と繊細な神経が必要である。
また、障害のある人々やその家族に療法の意味を説明し、身体的自立を援助するためにクライントの気持ちを受容した上で説得することも求められる。
専門能力の向上を図るために、各職場での研修の他に、日本理学療法士協会などの主催する学会や各種研修会などの機会も設けられている。また、同協会の認定資格として認定理学療法士（基礎理学療法、神経理学療法、運動器理学療法等7つの専門分野のうち1つ以上の専門分野に登録し、専門的臨床技能の維持や職能面における理学療法の技術などを高めていくことを目的とする）、専門理学療法士（7つの専門分野のうち1つ以上の専門分野に登録し、研究能力を高めることを目的とする）がある。
