治療の過程は、各種損傷に対して、評価、整復、固定、後療法、指導管理などに分かれる。
評価では、患者の症状を聞く問診、患部を観察する視診、患部に触れて診断する触診を行い、患者の状態を把握し、柔道整復師の業務範囲かどうかを判断する。その後、損傷の程度や患者の自然治癒力に合わせて治療方針を決定する。
整復では、骨折による骨の損傷や、脱臼・捻挫時の関節部分のずれなどを、手技により正常な状態に戻す。固定では、患部の治癒の促進、再転倒などの防止、痛みの軽減のために、ギプスなどの固定材やテーピングなどで患部を固定する。
後療法は、整復や固定による処置後の治癒を促進したり、早期に正常な運動機能を取り戻すことができるように行うもので、手技療法、運動療法、温熱などによる物理療法がある。また、以上の治療を行う間は、患者の日常生活について適切な指導管理を行い、患部に悪影響が生じないようにする。
骨折や脱臼の場合には、応急手当てを行う以外は、治療について医師の同意を得てから行うこととされている。
